God's Gender
God's Gender
What is God's gender ?
Video - Counting Blue Cars - Dishwalla
Must of been mid afternoon. I could tell by how far the child’s shadow stretched out. And He walked with a purpose, in his sneakers, down the street. He had many questions like children often do He said, "Tell me all your thoughts on God? Tell me am I very far?"
Must of been late afternoon. On our way the sun broke free of the clouds. We count only blue cars, skip the cracks, in the street
and ask many questions like children often do. We said, "Tell me all your thoughts on God? ‘Cause I would really like to meet her.. And ask her why we’re who we are. Tell me all your thoughts on God, 'cause I am on my way to see her. So tell me am I very far – Am I very far now?"
It’s getting cold, picked up the pace. How our shoes make hard noises in this place. Our clothes are stained. We pass many, cross eyed people and ask many questions like children often do. "Tell me all your thoughts on God? 'cause I would really like to meet her. And ask her why we’re who we are.
Tell me all your thoughts on God? ‘Cause I am on my way to see her. So tell me am I very far? Am I very far now? Am I very far now? Am I very far now?" [ 1 ]
This song may have been written to be provocative and make people think. It was Dishwalla’s first hit. With art, there are many different interpretations one could pull out of the lyrics. Let me take a stab at it. The opening verse shows how all people have a purpose. Everyone is born with the knowledge of God. We try to understand what our purpose is and who He is. However, in that quest for knowledge, some get confused by the philosophies of men. The questions about God come up in the first chorus. When the second chorus comes around, we see the word her and it grabs our attention. I remember the first time I heard this song, I thought to myself "did he just say her?" Notice the reference in the third verse to our sinful nature, “Our clothes are stained.." And we’re asking questions from people who don’t see straight, “We pass many, cross eyed people and ask many questions.” This is a well crafted song, with catchy emotional melodies, great musicianship, and great passionate vocal tone.
Isaiah 49:14-15
But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, And my Lord has forgotten me.” “Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you.
Isaiah 66:9
Shall I bring to the time of birth, and not cause delivery?” says the Lord. “Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?” says your God.
Isaiah 66:13
Shall I bring to the time of birth, and not cause delivery?” says the Lord. “Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?” says your God.
Hosea 13:8
I will meet them like a bear deprived of her cubs; I will tear open their rib cage, And there I will devour them like a lion. The wild beast shall tear them. Israel is likened to that of a mother bear robbed of her cubs.
These personifications and images of God are not to be taken in a wooden-literal sense. Musicians have referred to me as "a mother on the drums.” They didn’t mean that I was a woman who gave birth to children. It was their way of saying, “You’re a great drummer".
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
The Bible tells us that God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female He created them. As God created both male and female in his image, He does not participate in one or the other gender, but rather transcends gender. The Bible uses masculine title for God, such as Father and Son. It also uses feminine titles for God [ 2 ].
People have argued masculine titles are in the Bible because the Bible was written by men. This is wrong headed thinking. The bible is actually God-breathed and men were the translators. God is spirit. Can a spirit have a penis? No, but follow the logic. God became flesh and became a man, not a woman. There is more to femanine or masculine personhood than what we see in the physical realm. When I die and my soul is with the Lord, I am still Michael. I can be referred to as he, even though I am a soul waiting to be joined with my physical body in the resurrection. If a woman thinks she is a man, she can get a sex change. But will swapping her vagina out for a penis and getting a breast reduction make her a man? No. She may appear to be, but the very essence of her personhood goes beyond the physical realm. She is still a she even though she appears to be a he. What a strange world we live in. We do well to stick with the masculine language used for God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Feminine replacements such as Mother, Child and Womb stem from political correctness and are not Biblical.
